Functional Safety Engineer – Cockpit ECUs (Instrument Cluster, Infotainment, Head-Up Display) (m/f/d)| Wolfsburg, Germany
Position Overview
We seek an engineer experienced in ISO 26262 Part 4 (System Development) and Part 5
(Hardware Development) to support functional safety activities for infotainment and cockpit
electronics such as head units, digital instrument clusters, infotainment domain controllers,
displays, and cockpit ECUs.
Key Responsibilities
System-Level Functional Safety (ISO 26262 Part 4):
- Develop system-level safety work products:
- Item Definition, HARA, FSC, TSC, System Safety Requirements
- Perform system safety analyses:
- FMEA, FTA, DFA, Interface Analysis, Dependent Failure Analysis
- Define safety mechanisms for infotainment & cockpit systems (watchdogs, memory protection, communication monitoring)
- Ensure system-level traceability from requirements → design → tests
Hardware-Level Functional Safety (ISO 26262 Part 5):
- Develop Hardware Safety Requirements (HSR) and hardware architecture
- Perform hardware safety analyses:
- FMEDA, Hardware FTA, Failure Rate Calculations (SPFM/LFM/PMHF)
- Evaluate semiconductor components (SoCs, MCUs, GPUs) using vendor safety manuals
- Collaborate with hardware design, layout, component, and semiconductor teams
Verification, Reviews & Compliance:
- Support confirmation reviews, audits, and safety assessments per ISO 26262 Parts 2, 4, 5 & 8
- Participate in system, hardware, and integration verification
- Prepare safety case evidence and documentation
Cross-Team Collaboration:
- Work with software, hardware, systems, platform, HMI, and integration teams
- Collaborate with OEMs and suppliers to align safety requirements
Required Qualifications & Qualifications
- Experience: 5+ years in Automotive Functional Safety
- Strong experience with ISO 26262 Part 4 & Part 5 safety activities
- Hands-on background in infotainment / digital cockpit systems
- Experience with safety analyses: FMEA, FMEDA, FTA, DFA
- Familiarity with automotive safety mechanisms, semiconductors, SoCs(Qualcomm/NXP/Renesas/TI)
- Knowledge of communication protocols: CAN, LIN, SOME/IP, Automotive Ethernet
- Experience with tools like Ansys medini analyze, APIS IQ-FMEA, FMEDA tools, DOORS, Polarion
Preferred Skills
- ISO 26262 Functional Safety Engineer / Professional certification
- Automotive SPICE experience
- MBSE / SysML knowledge
- Prior experience with OEM infotainment or cockpit programs
